Indian Army Launches SAI A Messaging App Like WhatsApp



The quest for ''Atmanirbhar Bharat'',  Indian Army  launched a messaging app called SAI that will provide secure voice, text and video calling services to its soldiers.


"The model (of SAI) is similar to commercially available messaging applications like WhatsApp, Telegram, SAMVAD and GIMS and utilises end-to-end encryption messaging protocol," the Indian Army said in a statement.


The Army developed and named this messaging app as SAI, which stands for Secure Application for Internet.


"SAI will be utilised pan Army to facilitate secure messaging within the service...The application supports end-to-end secure voice, text and video calling services for Android platform over internet," the statement noted.


"The model is similar to commercially available messaging applications like WhatsApp, Telegram, SAMVAD and GIMS and utilises end-to-end encryption messaging protocol. SAI scores over on security features with local in-house servers and coding, which can be tweaked as per requirements," the ministry said in a release.


According to the statement, the application has been vetted by CERT-in empaneled auditor and Army Cyber Group, and the process for filing Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) hosting the infrastructure on NIC and working on iOS platform is currently in progress.

Who Build Indian Army SAI (Secure Application for Internet) App?

The SAI app is named after Colonel Sai Shankar, who build this AatmNirbhar secure messaging app. He also got appreciation from the Defense Minister for his skill.

SAI app is currently available only on Android. However, it is only available for army personnel. The general public can’t have any access to it.


Although, the iOS version of the SAI app is in the progress. Meanwhile, this development comes as the Indian Army recently banned Facebook and Instagram along with over 89 apps. Also, the reason behind this ban is related to national security risks.
